John Malone

John Dennis Malone, age 86, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at the Staples Care Center in Staples, MN, where he has resided for the past 2 years. He was born November 3, 1922, on a farm north of Verndale, to his parents Patrick and Lena (Tabery) Malone. John grew up in the Wadena area and attended country school through the 8th grade. He married Ione Goeden on June 30, 1948. They farmed west of Bluegrass, and raised a family of eleven children. He was a member of St. Hubert’s Parish until 1987 when he retired and moved to Wadena and joined St. Ann’s Parish. He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Society, Holy Name Society, and Knights of Columbus. He loved hunting, fishing, and woodworking, and he enjoyed bowling on a league until 3 years ago. Family vacations were taken in New Jersey, Colorado, Alaska, the Black Hills, Wisconsin Dells, along with Canadian fishing trips and deer hunting in Wyoming. Survivors include his wife, Ione; children, Julianne (Jay) Thompson of Columbia Heights, Larry (Karen) of Wadena, Marilyn (Chuck) Rhode of Onamia, Rosemary (Chuck) Jernberg of St. Cloud, Jim (Pam) of Foreston, Janice (Wayne) Dertinger of Frazee, Alan (Shirley) of Wadena, Dean of Sebeka, Eugene (Sue) of Cold Spring, Terence (Julie) of Owatonna, and Elizabeth (John) Schmitt of Richmond; 36 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Eileen Johnson of Wasilla, AK, Martin, Lorraine (Joe) Goeden, and Tom (Evelyn) all of Wadena, Joe (Leojean) of Bemidji, Paul (Vera) of Sebeka, Patty (Lee) Kicker and Eugene (Eileen) both of Wadena, and Joan (Steve) Vokurka of Littleton, Co; sister-in-law, Barbara Malone; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Richard and Maurice; brother-in-law Vern Johnson; and sister-in-law, Patricia Malone. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 29, 2009 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Wadena with Father Wilfred Theisen as celebrant. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Wadena. Pallbearers were Jason Thompson, Patrick Malone, Charlie Rhode, Mike Jernberg, Ryan Malone, Dusty Dertinger, and Bob Malone.
