The funeral service for Marilyn Louise Szczech of Perham, formerly of Wadena, will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Wadena, with Deacon Bob Schaffer presiding. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Marilyn was born to Einar and Violet Helberg on October 27, 1933, in Minneapolis, MN, and graduated from Minneapolis North High School. She married her soul mate, Gerald (Jerry) Szczech on March 20, 1951. After making their home for a short time in Minneapolis, Marilyn and Jerry settled in Wadena where they raised their seven children. Marilyn worked as a Paraprofessional at Wadena Public Schools for more than 25 years. After retiring, Marilyn and Jerry spent winters in Florida where they attended various activities and spent time on the beach. She was a long-time member of Wadena VFW Auxiliary, Christian Mothers, and St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Marilyn was a dedicated and proud mother who left her family with countless special memories. She was a strong, humble, selfless, independent person who treasured time being surrounded by the people she loved most; her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchild. She enjoyed varied activities which included fishing, camping, deer hunting, golfing, gardening, canning, shopping, and cheering on Minnesota sports teams. Additionally, Marilyn was an attentive listener and a loyal friend, especially enjoying her Wednesday “girl’s night out” with her good friend Patty. Marilyn’s legacy is carried on by her beloved children, Gerald Jr. (Sue), Jody (Ken), Jeffrey, Janine (Chuck), Janet (Bruce), Jaclyn (Doug), and Janell (Mike). She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, brother Robert (Penny), brothers-in-law Donny and Don, along with extended family members, and friends. Marilyn is welcomed into heaven by her husband of 67 years Jerry (2018), grandson Ryan, parents, and brother Edward. Honorary pallbearers are Marilyn’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchild. Serving as pallbearers are Aaron Szczech-Johnson, Chuck Beck, David Kurth, Ken Ovrebo, Kyle Wetteland, and Mike Schiller.
