The Mass of Christian Burial for Mary (Gaida) Brown of Wadena, will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m on Monday October 30, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Father Gabriel Walz as celebrant. Mary was born in Browerville, MN to join John and Elizabeth (Sobota) Gaida on May 9, 1926. She attended the College of St. Benedict and graduated from St. Cloud State University with a major in education. She married Vincent Brown in 1950. As a teacher for many years in the Wadena School District, Mary taught kindergarten and second grade. She also took time to be a substitute teacher at St. Ann’s Catholic School. She was an active member of the Wadena Education and Minnesota Education Associations. She retired from teaching in 1991 to pursue her other interests of baking, reading, quilting and world travel. Mary’s travels took her to the Holy Land, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and her favorite country, Poland. Mary was a devout Catholic and made certain she prayed the rosary each day with special intentions for family and friends. Mary remarked that her greatest accomplishment was her family. She is survived by her children, Barb (Dan) Bakke, Frances (John) Povolny, Greg (Kathy) Brown, Steve (Ann) Brown, and John Brown; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; along with many relatives, friends, and former students. Preceding Mary in death were her husband, Vincent Brown; parents, John and Elizabeth Gaida; and sister, Joan Schmitz. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Wadena, MN. The family would like to thank the staff of The Meadows of Wadena and Knute Nelson Hospice for their loving care of Mary. Memorials in Mary’s name may be directed to Christ the King Catholic School, Browerville, MN and the Church of St. Ann, Wadena, MN.
