Michael Calhoun

The Celebration of Life for Michael Calhoun of Pompano Beach, FL and formerly of Wadena and Minneapolis, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 12, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Deer Creek Pastor Lee Kantonen presiding. Friends may call at Schuller Family Funeral Homes’ Johnson - Schuller Chapel in Wadena on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Casual attire requested. Michael, age 50, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 24, 2016 in Pompano Beach, FL. Michael was born to Larry Calhoun and Victoria “Vicky” Bell (Ferguson) Calhoun on August 7, 1965 in South Boston, VA. From an early age he was very athletic playing tee-ball even before moving to Wadena, MN in 1973. Here he played Little League baseball and softball, along with football, track & field, golf and drums in the school marching band. His musical talents even brought him to play in a “garage band”. His main interest was hockey which he played through high school and on an “old guys” hockey team in Florida before his death. Mike was an assistant coach for the Pee Wee Hockey team of 84-85. He also loved the water, was a lifeguard at the Wadena Pool, and taught scuba diving in Minneapolis and in Florida. Michael attended the United Church of Christ in Wadena where he was baptized and confirmed. He graduated from Wadena High School and furthered his education at Brainerd Community College and St. Cloud State. Being a person of great energy, he bettered himself with various jobs including insurance sales, Bennigans in the Twin Cities and Alexandria, VA, Tires Plus, detailing RVs, removing hail damage in the U.S. and Australia, and finally teaching & guiding scuba divers out on the ocean. It was important to him to work-out and stay in good physical shape. The day before his death, Mike played in the old guys hockey team once more. Mike enjoyed a good time! He was a free-spirited, caring man who loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was loved by everyone, always smiling and full of fun. He touched the lives of many people in his lifetime. Michael was preceded in death by his grandparents Victor & Dorothy Ferguson and Ernest & Eugenia Calhoun; uncles David and Richard Calhoun; cousin Rebecca; and step-brother James B. McKnight. He will be dearly missed by his father Larry (Marlene) Calhoun of Wadena; mother Victoria Bell (Ferguson) Calhoun of South Boston, VA; daughter Kristen Hall-Johnson of Williamsburg, VA; brothers Rob (Mary) Calhoun of Sauk Rapids, and Chris (Heather) Calhoun of Sartell; step-sister Michelle McKnight and step-brother Tim McKnight both of Wadena; niece Courtney Calhoun and nephew Carter Calhoun; step-nieces and nephews Saige, Austin, Hannah and many others; uncles Spencer Ferguson of Richmond, VA and Ernest Calhoun of Olean, NY; aunts Carolyn (Billie) Slagle of South Boston, VA and Bonnie (Bob) Enos of Bolivar, NY; cousins Peyton Ferguson, Dane Ferguson, Bruce, Sarah Jane and Leah, Dave Calhoun, Jodi White, Jimmy Calhoun, Kelly Howe, Tom, Paul and John Gonska, Ricky Calhoun, Kim Calhoun, Lisa Calhoun and Craig Calhoun; along with a host of relatives and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be fellow members of the Old Guys Hockey League and Wadena High School Hockey Team. Inurnment will be in the Wadena Cemetery, Wadena, MN.
