Thomas Nyberg

The funeral service for Thomas “Tom” Nyberg of Wadena will be held at 11:00a.m. on Monday, October 13, at the Wadena Alliance Church in Wadena, with Pastors Aaron Andrews and Vaughn White officiating. Friends may call on Sunday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Johnson-Schuller Chapel in Wadena. Visitation will resume on Monday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. On October 8th as the sun set and the full moon rose Tom Nyberg passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, and under the gentle and skillful care of Legacy Hospice of Wadena. Tom was born on Oct 4, 1927 to Les & Dora Nyberg in Wadena, MN. He served in the US Navy at the end of WWII, married Eileen “Paulie” Paulson on August 7, 1954 and enjoyed 37 wonderful years of marriage, traveling, and spending time at Big Pine Lake with their three children. After Eileen’s death in 1991, Tom married Iris Meckel on January 21, 1993 and for the next 21 years they traveled extensively splitting time between Wadena and McCall, Idaho. Tom had a passion for waterfowl and for over 50 years he chased snow geese across the prairies of North Dakota and Canada and relived every year’s hunt with tales of each adventure. It was only his failing hearing and eyesight which finally kept him at home instead of in the fields saying “can’t hear ‘em, can’t see’ em” and can’t hit ‘em”. Tom had a lifelong connection to the Wadena community as an owner-operator of the Farmer’s Hatchery, a 50 year member of the Lions, and a member of the VFW, Elks and Jaycees. He traveled extensively – to Hawaii during a stint in the Navy (WWII), to Alaska, Washington state, Nevada, Idaho, Canada and points between. He would joyously recount stories of vacation debacles, hunting & fishing trips and family history if the opportunity arose. His true enjoyment was the time spent with family and friends. Tom was preceded in death by parents Les & Dora, brothers Dick & John; and wife Eileen. He is survived by wife Iris, sisters Dorie Sweere (Dale), Julie Fleming, sons Les (Diane), Bob (Cindy), daughter Nancy Ament (Kevin); his “Ideeeho” family of Tom (Dawn) Meckel, Tony (Janet) Meckel, Rita (Randy) McMahan, Paula (Claus) White; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many, many friends. Military honors will be provided by the Elmer Goche Post 3922, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wadena, MN. Burial will be in Wadena Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Legacy Home Health & Hospice, 201 Shady Lane Dr., in Wadena.
