Leo Ament

September 4, 1923 - April 23, 2022

The Mass of Christian Burial for Leo Ament of Wadena, will be celebrated at 11:00 am. on Monday, May 2, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Wadena. Visitation will be at the Johnson-Schuller Chapel in Wadena on Sunday from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. with parish prayers at 6:00 p.m. and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Leo passed away Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena, MN. Leo Henry Ament was born Sept. 4, 1923, to Henry and Clara Ament, rural Bluffton, MN. He served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines, and stateside after contracting yellow jaundice during WW II. He received his education near Bluffton and attended Brown Institute. Leo worked for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railway beginning in 1949 until his retirement in 1981, primarily in the Red River Valley. Leo was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Lodge, VFW, and the Senior Citizens Center. He did volunteer tax work for a number of years for Senior Citizens. Leo married Dolores Schmitz in Verndale on January 21, 1946. They had four children: Vincent (Betty) Ament, Ashland, WI, Vicki Trenda (Albert) Grafton, ND, and Vollie Ament (Marv Erickson) Casa Grande, AZ. Leo had three grandchildren: Bennet (Selina) Johnson and their children Jacob, Ariel and Jasmine; Emily Ament (Alfredo Urdaneta), and their children Zaragoza and Aurelia, and Jill (Todd) Gibbon, and their children, Xander and Flint. He is also survived by siblings: Theresa Goeden, Wadena, MN, Alice Keppers, Tuscon, AZ, Mary (Don) Kuntz, Glenwood, MN, George (Penny) Ament, Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Tom (Pegge) Ament, Bluffton, MN; along with sisters-in-law: Vione Ament, Wadena, and Deane Ament, Perham. Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores (2016); infant son, Arthur (1948); siblings: Norbert (Trace), Ray (Ev), Ed, Amelia (Bill Schmitz), Helen (Bob Gorghuber), and Andrew; and brothers-in-law: Leo Goeden and Urban Keppers. Pallbearers will be Joyce Uselman, Ken Schmitz, Bennet Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Stan Ament, Joan Ament, Cindy Schmitz, and LeRoy Ament. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Wadena, MN. Memorials in Leo’s name may be directed to Knute Nelson Hospice, or a favorite charity or church of your choosing.
