Clarence Horn

Clarence Walter Horn was born on May 20, 1905 to Martin P. and Catherine (Phelps) Horn in Verndale, Minnesota. He passed away, at the age of 103, on July 13, 2008 at Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena. Clarence was united in marriage with Eva Chase on December 29, 1928 in Long Prairie. They farmed in the Verndale area from 1929 to 1943 when they went into the grocery and meat market business in Verndale until 1947. That business was sold and a grocery store in Clarissa was purchased in 1948. After it sold they moved to Wadena where he had two grocery stores and was a wholesale grocery salesman for Steinkraus Wholesale Grocery Warehouse for 11 years. In 1959 he became a car salesman for Jim Larson Ford for 1 year, Nightengale Motors for 4 years, Ken Stuntebeck Ford for 17 years, and Kals Kars for 4 years. Eva passed away on July 15, 1983. Clarence was united in marriage with Wilma Detrick on June 8, 1984 in Wadena. He retired in 1985 to become a RSVP. Clarence was a member of the Wadena United Methodist Church, Wadena Masonic Lodge #156/ Wadena Chapter #66, Fergus Falls Alfa Council #8, Wadena Commandry # 29, El Zagal Shrine Fargo, ND, Eastern Star of Verndale, dual member of Eastern Star Wadena, Associate Guardian for Jobs Daughters, past member and Exhalted Ruler of Wadena Elks Lodge, past member of Wadena Chamber of Commerce, International Peace Garden Lodge of Free Mason of North Dakota, Canada, and Minnesota, with life memberships in all the organizations. Clarence was awarded the Hiram Award Grand Lodge of Minnesota in 1993, Wadena County Outstanding Senior Citizen Award in 1988, Wadena Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1991, and Wadena County Outstanding Citizen in 1992. He enjoyed golf, volunteering, RSVP, and reading. Clarence was preceded in death by wives, Eva and Wilma; son, Phillip; brothers, Kermith, Carl, Clifford, and LeRoy; and sisters, Vera Horn, Bernice Pilgrim, Mildred Weber, and Laura Swedeskey. He is survived by son, Duane of Sheridan, WY, 6 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and many great-great grandchildren; brother, Richard of New England, ND, and sisters, Arlene Ferley of West Fargo, ND, and Marilyn Lynch of Alexandria. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 in the United Methodist Church in Wadena with Pastor Shirley Nelson officiating. Pallbearers were Stan Fetters, Dave Erickson, Jr., Bill McIntire, Al Friese, Chris Klein, and Paul Maki. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Verndale. In lieu of flowers Clarence requested memorials to the Shrine Burn & Children’s Hospital, the Knight’s Templar Eye Foundation and the Masonic Memorial Cancer Hospital.
