The Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Daniel Colby will be celebrated at 11:00a.m. on Tuesday, April 16, at St. Frederick’s Catholic Church in Verndale, with Father Lauren Germann as celebrant. Visitation will be held on Monday, at the Schuller Family Funeral Homes’ Verndale Chapel from 5:00-8:00 p.m. with Prayers and a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at the church on Tuesday from 9:30a.m. until the time of the Mass. Colby, age 82, passed away at his rural Verndale home, surrounded by his family April 8, 2024, with loving care by his family and Lakewood Hospice of Staples, MN. He is joined in heaven with open arms by his parents, Vida (Witthuhn) and Roy Colby; sister, Elaine Valentine; infant son, Jason; son-in-law, Craig Cameron; and nephew, Jeff Colby. Daniel Ray Colby was born on April 7, 1942, in Wadena, MN. He farmed with his dad from a very young age. He graduated from Verndale High School with the class of 1960, where he enjoyed being part of the football and basketball teams. He went on to play football at Bemidji State University. In 1962, Dan joined the National Guard and later drove delivery truck for Sunbeam Bread and the Cenex Co-op. Dan returned to farming in 1969 as it allowed him to spend time with Beth and his young family. As it turned out, Dan realized his passion for farming allowed him to work alongside his children, neighbors, relatives and friends. Dan began raising potatoes for Ore-Ida and was acknowledged for his dedication. In 1988, the Golden Potato award, for consistent standard of quality, was given to him and his family. Dan always raised beef cattle to make his farm complete. He also enjoyed hauling grain for neighboring farmers. Dan had many hobbies including fishing, hunting, camping and spending time with his family. Also, he looked forward to time spent with the Wadena County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse. What truly mattered to this very humble man, who was larger than life to each of them, was his family. Dan is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Davis) Colby; daughters Catherine (John) Breyer, Danelle (Jay) Weiher, Pauline (Jon) Shereck, Rhonda (Mark) Varriano, and son Jacob Colby; brother, Junior (Deeda) Colby and brother-in-law, Ned Valentine. Dan is survived by his proud grandchildren: Andrew (Megan) Breyer; Allyson, Aaron, and Ashton Breyer; Britne (Trevor) Haasch, Daniel (Amber) Weiher; Noah and Zachary Shereck, Justin (Christina) Cameron; Drew and Joseph Varriano; 7 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be: Andrew Breyer, Allyson Breyer, Aaron Breyer, Ashton Breyer, Britne Haasch, Daniel Weiher, Noah Shereck, Zachary Shereck, Justin Cameron, Drew Varriano and Joseph Varriano.
