Duane G. Hanson

The memorial service for Duane Hanson of Park Rapids, and formerly of Henning and Detroit Lakes, will be held at 11;00 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, at the Johnson-Schuller Chapel in Wadena. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Duane, age 84, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017 , under hospice care in Park Rapids, MN. Duane was born the youngest of seven children to Julius and Clara (Swanholm) Hanson on April 26, 1933 in Windom, MN. Duane grew up on the family farm and attended District 18 Jackson Country School. In 1949, the family moved into the home Duane’s father built in Windom, MN. Duane graduated from Windom High School in 1952. The following year Duane entered the armed forces, serving ten months of the Korean Conflict. He returned stateside and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. While on leave in December 1954, he met his wife to be, Janet Penoyer. They wrote to each other for over three months until he was honorably discharged on April 13, 1955. Duane and Janet were married at the American Lutheran Church in Windom on May 28, 1955. Duane worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation in Windom and later in Detroit Lakes. Upon retirement in 1996, he and Janet moved to Westbrook and later to Henning to be near their daughters. Due to failing health, Duane moved to Park Rapids in 2016 and was under hospice care. Over the years Duane spent his leisure hours in fishing and working on small woodworking projects like arbors and chairs. He also enjoyed taking care of his home and helping in Janet’s flower gardens. Duane was preceded in death by his wife Janet on April 4, 2015; parents Julius and Clara; son Darry; daughter Glenda Miller; brothers Chester, Harley and Verlon; and sisters Mamie Allstot and Elvera Hanson. He is survived by his children Gregory Hanson of Wadena and Penny (Mark Maile) Hanson of Detroit Lakes; sister Clarine Ludvigson of Windom; grandchildren DJ (Stacy) Hanson, Jacob Hanson, Tim (Becky) Miller, Brandi (Jeremiah) Davidson and their children Maci and Mya Davidson, Christina Osmonson, and Austin Osmonson. Inurnment will be next to his wife in Jeffers Cemetery, Jeffers, MN.
