Garven Smith

The funeral service for Garven Smith of rural Hewitt will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hewitt, with Pastor Gerold Goetz officiating. Friends may call on Friday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Domian-Anderson Chapel in Bertha, and at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Garven passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at his home in rural Hewitt, MN. He was 81 years old. Garven was born to Morris and Elsie (Grossman) Smith on January 14, 1933, in Stowe Prairie Township, Todd County, MN. He graduated from Bertha High School. On April 30, 1953 Garven entered the U.S. Army and served honorably until his discharge April 29, 1955, at Fort Lewis, WA. He was a member of the American Legion. Garven married Harriet Ann Backberg on November 3, 1956, and they raised three children. His days were filled with the tasks of farming and had worked as a welder and in maintenance at Homecrest Industries in Wadena. He enjoyed antique tractors, attending threshing shows and spending time at the lake. Garven was good at fixing things and getting the last mile out of all of his belongings. He enjoyed visiting with his friends at the Hewitt café. His all-time favorite pastime was being with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Garven was preceded in death by his parents Morris and Elsie; son Jon; brother Alan and sister Mavis. He is survived by his son Kent (Dorothy) Smith of Wadena; daughter Kristen (Gregory) Anderson of Hewitt; daughter-in-law Krista Smith of Monticello; grandchildren Aaron Smith, Chad (Leah) Smith, Stacy (Steven) Rouse, Darcy (Josh) Seuss, Derrick (Bekka) Buchholz, Heidi (Ryan) Reuter, Trent (Jenna) Anderson, Blaine (Ashley) Anderson, Ella Smith, Isaac Smith, Brittany (Stefan) Lindahl and Tyler (Amy) Zillmer; great-grandchildren Cole, Elise, Halle Reuter, Brayden & Lauren Anderson, Hailey, Brooklyn, & Isaiah Smith; brother Lewis (Jean) Smith; and sister-in-law Ruth Smith. Military honors will be provided by William Larson Post 366, American Legion, Bertha, MN. Serving as pallbearers will be Garven’s grandsons Aaron Smith, Chad Smith, Derrick Buchholz, Trent Anderson, Blaine Anderson, Isaac Smith, Ryan Reuter and Tyler Zillmer. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery near Bertha, MN. Arrangements are with the Domian-Anderson Chapel in Bertha. (www.SchullerFamilyFH.com)
