Joan Ostlund

The Mass of Christian Burial for Joan Ostlund of Wadena will be celebrated at 11:00a.m. on Saturday, October 26, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Wadena. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 until 8:00p.m. at the Johnson-Schuller Chapel in Wadena, with a Rosary at 5:00 and Prayers at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at the church on Saturday from 9:30a.m. until the time of the Mass. In her final days she was cared for by her loving family and Knute Nelson Hospice. Joan was born to Magdalena “Maggie” (Schmidt) and Bruno Kramer on November 4, 1945, in Aberdeen, SD. She attended Holy Cross Catholic School through the 8th grade and finished her high school years at Ipswich High School graduating in 1963. She attended Presentation College in Aberdeen and graduated in 1965. On August 14, 1971, Joan married Douglas Ostlund Jr at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich. They started their life together in Bertha, MN, where they were blessed with four kids. Joan started her career in 1972 at the Bertha-Hewitt school as a Library Aide and then as a District Secretary before she retired in 2008. Joan was all about family and loved spending time watching her kids at their sporting events, concerts, school plays and anything else they had on the calendar. She loved to travel and see new places. Particularly the kids’ band trips that she was honored to chaperone and in the semi-truck with her husband. Joan also spent her days volunteering at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (where she was a member), Sports Boosters, Band Boosters, and many other organizations at the school and within the community. You’d also find Joan bowling in leagues at both Eagle Lanes and Wadena Lanes. She enjoyed her bowling nights with her teams and sometimes allowed a kid or two to tag along and join in the fun. After her retirement, Joan and Doug moved to Wadena, MN where she spent her time being ‘Grandma Daycare’ for the grandkids and grand pups. And just like with her own kids, she rarely missed an event for her grandkids, even when she was ill. She loved spending time with her grandkids, traveling with them and spoiling them with their favorite candy. Joan also enjoyed spending her spare time camping with friends and family, gardening, reading, teaching her kids about canning, and spending her birthdays at a casino. Surviving Joan are her husband of 53 years, Douglas; daughters, Nadine (Mathew Kieffer) Ostlund of Pierz, Nicole (Jeff) Berg of Staples, and Nanette “Nette” (Mac) Nelson of Wadena; son, Neil (Kara) Ostlund of Galesville, WI; grandchildren: Jackson, Drew and Corben Berg, Dalanie, Declan and Darbee Nelson, Gauge Kieffer, Parker and Paxton Ostlund; sister, Agnes Heston; brothers, Joe Kramer, Adam (Winnie) Kramer, and Mike (Diana) Kramer; brother-in-law, Denny (Audrey) Ostlund; sisters-in-law, Deb (Tim) Cary, Dori (Joel) Semler, and DeeDee (Edward) Kintigh; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Joan in death were her two unborn children; grandson, Remington Kieffer; parents, Maggie and Bruno Kramer; sisters, Marie Genzler and Minnie Ryman; brother, Ed Kramer; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Kramer and Micki Kramer; brothers-in-law, Orville Genzler, Gerry Ryman, Rex Heston, and Daniel “Butch” Ostlund; mother and father-in-law, Sally and Douglas Ostlund Sr; and nephews, Ray Genzler and Brian Struss.
